Where Are the Rogues?

28 Oct

The time has come for me to ask advice of someone else here. As my mage finally reached Northrend last night (level 69 at the moment) the time comes swiftly for me to plan which alt to level up next. In my previous poll where I asked this same question, Druid and Shaman were the top choices and the ones that I was interested in leveling at the time.

But I have changed my mind…again. I still want to level a Druid pretty strongly, but with the announcement of Cataclysm I would really rather wait for the Worgen to be made available so that I can roll a Worgen Druid. So chances are very high that my series on leveling a Druid will continue to remain on hold until Cataclysm has been released. There are also a very large number of Druid blogs that already exist and you can find links to several of them in my blogroll over there on the right side of the page.

The Shaman class still appeals to me a lot, but for some reason I just don’t have a lot of desire to play one right now. I still have Belgawrath sitting around level 48 doing a whole lot of nothing right now, but I log onto him and just don’t even feel like leaving town. It’s not that the Shaman class isn’t fun or anything, it’s actually a blast just plowing through things with him, I’m just not feeling it right now. So, the Shaman series will remain on hold for a while yet as well.

I am currently looking at two classes for my next alt instead: Rogue and Warlock

Since my current focus in my Mage, I’m not sure that I want to jump straight into another caster class, so I’m not quite so eager about the Warlock as I am the Rogue. Since that puts the Rogue on top, that is what I am currently leaning towards for my next alt. I do not plan on rolling him until next week or the one after though, so there is still a chance that I will change my mind once again and go with a Warlock (or another class all together, who knows?) instead.

As I have mentioned before though, when creating a character I generally start out by researching their class to find out the basics of what I want to do. And while I find numerous blogs on all of the other classes (Paladins, Death Knights, Druids, and Priests being chief among them), I find almost none on the Rogue so far. I have found a few here and there but the vast majority of them have not been updated in a year or longer. While some of that information remains valid today, just as much of it has changed.

What I need from you, my dear readers, are blogs or other sources of Rogue leveling information that you can find that are Current, Free, and Useful for leveling. If you know of any blogs or other reliable sources of Rogue information, please post them here in your replies. As I level my own Rogue I will pass on the information from my experiences here so that others can put them to use as well, just like I do for all of my other leveling posts.

I don’t have a whole lot of rogue info since I’m fairly new to the WoW blogosphere but I have a lvl 50 human rogue who’s been sadly neglected while I pushed my mage to 80. I’m itching to try my hand at melee again… not to mention that PvP as a rogue is so satisfying. Revenge for the indignity of getting stun locked in the middle of Warsong Gulch >_< If I find anything good, I'll let you know!

Last night I managed to find the http://shadowpanther.net/ site which looks like it has some potential. It’s largely text based, but the info is good and regularly updated.

So far that’s pretty well the extent of decent resources I’ve found. A search for Rogue Blogs resulted in a ton of results but after 4 pages of scam sites selling gold and leveling guides I gave up on that search. I’ll try again later though.

AND seeing a rogue top out the DPS meter the other day in Ony25 at around 8k? Yeah. I need to get a move on. ^_^

Being a pure dps class, I would certainly hope they top the dps charts. ;)

Alright, I sort of lied. A little.

I wasn’t feeling well when I went home last night so I didn’t feel like dealing with any of my high level toons so instead I rolled a male and female of every Alliance, all rogues, and took a look at their attacks and general movements and such to see which I’d like to watch more as I level them up. Something about the rogue just makes me want to pay close attention to my movements in combat, so I like them to be cool looking. In the end, it came down to only two choices: Female Dwarf and Female Night Elf.

Of the two the dwarf’s look just completely put me off though I did like the jump-spinning attack for Eviscerate. Luckily, the NElf female does pretty much the same thing, not to mention having racials that fit in perfectly with the class. So, instead of being rolled in two weeks as I had planned, Crimsonsilk the Female Night Elf Rogue was rolled last night.

To honor the female dwarf’s cool attack though, I’ll be leveling the NElf up in the Dwarf areas and working on getting Exalted with both the Dwarf and Gnome races as soon as possible.

I’ll be changing my human to worgen race in Cataclysm. She’s already a skinner/LW so it will be perfect with the racials, as well as giving that extra oomph for attack.

I decided on Herb/Alch for mine. Herbs for the heal that can be used without breaking stealth (and it doesn’t break my racial stealth either), and Alch just because it’s yet another method of increasing my stats with potions.

Skinning is great, it’s what I use on my twink and the extra crit shows nicely. I gave it a lot of thought before deciding on Alch instead. I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up switching at some point though.

I’m actually working on a subtlety rogue leveling build for my blog. It’s a ton of fun if you grab a couple heartseeker heirloom daggers.

Sounds good. I’ve got your blog on my roll which I check frequently so I’ll take a look at soon as it pops up.

I’ve gone ahead and done a small bit of leveling on her so far to pass the time with so many other people focusing on raiding and holiday events and such, but I’m taking it slow. Right now I am going with an Assassination build though I know Combat to be the most common one for leveling. Right now I’m doing just fine with it, though I might change to combat later if things just aren’t working.

But, the server I rolled her on doesn’t have an 80 on it, my highest there is my 70 mage. So, there will sadly be no heirloom gear over there. I am slowly gathering SK Shards through instances but it will be quite some time before I’m able to get anything with them at the slow pace that I’m gathering them right now.

I have added links to a few blogs that I have found for helping me level my rogue.

I initially started out with an Assassination build that was working just fine, but I’m jumping over to Combat to get a feel for it as well before I decide which of the two really appeals to me the most.
