Weekend PUG Report: Three Stooges and a Dwarf

22 Mar

This weekend was one for leveling various alts. I didn’t want to bother farming or raiding on my mage, I wasn’t especially in the mood to kill people (PvP) either for some odd reason, so I just focused on the alts. First up on that list was my little druid, Hotstuffbaby who was initially created as a 19 Twink who I then decided to level as a 29 Twink, and then throwing that idea out the window as well, have decided to level to 80 as my healer on my main server.

Lucky for me there are a few other people in our guild right now that are leveling alts as well, so we had four people ready and willing to group for randoms with a 5th that we were sure would join us once she woke up (sorry Cat, had to mention that part too).

While in a group of four we were missing our tank. Luckily all four of us were able to “tank” in some form or fashion (Warrior, Warlock Pet, Hunter Pet, Druid) if the tank we got sucked, so we queued up anyway. My evaluation of low level dungeons in the new LFG is that generally speaking the healers are usually good though often the most impatient of the bunch, DPS are usually the most annoying with no knowledge of threat management or playing some odd spec that puts them at half the tank’s DPS, and tanks are either unbelievably good or suck about as much as humanly possible.

Tanks are the primary example here in this post, two tanks that absolutely failed followed by a third that had some great threat skills and allowed our DPS to go all out and still have no problem. I am going to list names and servers here because anytime I post someone that failed at something, I took the time to try to help them in game first. If they make some effort to improve, then they get left off of the blog. If they do nothing to correct the situation, then maybe they should have thought about that before being a moron in the presence of a blogger.

Example Time

Kremul, Madoran-US (A)
The first fail tank was a Warrior named “Kremul the Clothy”. I thought I got a screenshot from when I had moused over his chest piece, but I didn’t. So in case you can’t tell from the picture, he was wearing Shimmering Silk Robes. He was also wearing +Intellect rings, grey pants and grey shoulders, but those can be somewhat excused if we assume he just hasn’t had any good drops. The robe though? I can’t get passed that one. He got kicked from the group and then we just 4-manned the dungeon.

Arzoft, Bloodhoof-US (A)
Right after we were done with the fail warrior we got in a group with this druid whose idea of tanking was to cast Starfire on the mob and then attack him in caster form with his staff. After that first pull I said in party, “Arz, you did notice you’re the tank for this run, right?” He then shifted into Cat form, cast Dash, and ran down the hall to agro ever mob and then bring them back to us. I had already had enough fail tanking from Kremul so I told everyone in vent to just hold off and let the stupid cat die and then we finished off the pack. You can look at the chat log in the picture here to see the level of Arz’s intelligence. He typed to us about 20 times in that “language” of his before we managed to vote kick him after his timer was done. I tried to speak his language of random character strings, but I don’t think we made any progress.

Gingerdread, Stormrage-US (A)
We didn’t want to have our Fury Warrior tank SM for us though, so we requeued and found ourselves a Dwarf Warrior. When he joined I took a look at his spec to get an idea of what to expect and I saw a combination of Arms and Prot. My initial reaction was a facepalm, no lie, but I’m willing to give anybody a shot at anything at least once, so on we went. This guy was generating crazy amounts of aggro, allowing all of our DPS to go all out without any worries. If someone did steal threat from him, he used his taunts and got it back. Ginger is easily the best Warrior tank I’ve seen outside of Northrend.

Gotuhunter, Trollbane-US (A)
We’ll break away from tanking now and go back to another example of failure. I hate to leave you on a bad note, but this one is worthy of being mentioned as well. It’s a level 79 Hunter that decided he just had to roll need on a cloak that dropped. It’s a tanking cloak as you might notice from the Armor, Strength, Stamina, and Defense bonuses on it, or from the fact that both plate wearers in the group rolled Need on it (I got picked for DPS in this one, but I’m main spec Frost tank). His reason for rolling need on it was very impressive, “lot bette then the won i got and it still has strenght”.

The cloak wasn’t a huge upgrade, as you can see from my RatingsBuster addon, but did I mention that I’m 3 points away from being Defense capped? Screw you too, Gotuhunter.

Can never forgive you for screencapping me making bandages on a Lock :(

J/c. Yeah, the druid-tank guy was whack. Ginger was outta control.

I did get a REALLY GOOD druid tank for that Uldaman I randomed on Sunday.

Hey, we all have to find something to do when we’re bored, right? ;)

Yeah, Ginger really surprised me. I’m getting more faith in Warrior tanks these days. They really sucked something fierce when I first started playing (at least the ones I ran into).

I’ve been very impressed with bears lately too. I never saw bear tanks during BC or when Wrath first came out, but here in the last few months they’re just owning face.

You know, I use bandages all the time on my warlock. Conspicuously using them around healers helps mitigate some of the irritation every healer feels about Life Tap.

I’m actually annoyed at how many Warlocks I have to encourage to use Life Tap when I’m healing. If it’s a hot and heavy battle, then yeah LT on your own friggin time, but when I’m sitting at 98% mana and literally doing a /sleep during every encounter, your bars should both be full constantly.

I wish some healers would just let me be, at times. I know its their arse if I die, but, really.. we’re in a pug and were in vanilla. I’m pretty sure unless everyone else is just dreadful that me dying isn’t going to wipe us. I also have no problem bandaging myself between pulls. Its why I made them anyways.

I’d like to see how SiLi’d Corrupt can really pour out heals on me.

I mini-tested this by trying to run out of the Kurzen cave in STV. I just started running, dotting everyone I passed, tab-dotting, etc and made it out the second time using on my healthstone :D. If it weren’t for getting dazed, i may not have needed that. I also Oom’d for fear of a tap taking me too far down :p

I also got to put it to the test a little in Stormgarde (Arathi) when I errantly ran into a house where I thought my mob was. The 3 mobs there and 4 behind me darn near got me [did get my vdub :'( ]

Your reaction to seeing his spec before seeing him tank is much like my reaction to seeing a Ret Paladin tank a heroic. I was *headdesk* until I saw what they could do. People who can work out with their spec can always surprise ya :)

I really have to work on getting Tiny’s ass back to Durotan. *grumble grumble*

I still haven’t seen a Ret tank in heroics, but if DKs can tank in Blood Presence and Shamans and Rogues are both tanking too, then I can’t say that I’m really all that surprised.

Yeah, tell Sewer he’s starting to stink it up on Horde side and he needs to get his funky butt back over here with us.

Wow, in all of my experience with pugs from the LFG feature I have never run into anyone even close to as bad as those guys. It seems like you are just unlucky! :)

Defense, strength, spirit and spell power are the top things to look for as a hunter, right??? Maybe it increased his block rating too? (Yes, this is all sarcasm)

I usually end up really lucky in PUGs. But when things get bad they get REALLY bad.

The Hunter rolling on the tanking cloak really bothered me (and the tank), but the others were just as much a source of entertainment as they were a reference for how to fail with your class.

I can’t really complain to hard about tanks in general. I’ve only dabbled in Prot Pally tanking, but nothing more than some old guild runs. I’d like to try my hand at tanking a little, but.. dunno that I’d want to level as prot again. Maybe level Ret till the /win button shows up in Prot? :P

I have two tanks, I can complain. :P

Pally tanking is easy. At 20 you pretty well have all the threat you’ll ever need, though you will still run out of mana. At 30 you bore your healers and you don’t run out of mana. At 40 the mobs just hand you their loots and say “gg, boss.” And from there on you just get more powerful, more unkillable, and more frustrated at the fact that your repair bills on your plate are higher at level 70 than your caster’s raiding cloth is at 80.

Well at least the pugs were entertaining? :)

Since I’ve been playing I’ve ran into some very good warriors. I’ve ran into bad ones too, but well there are some awesome warriors out there. The same goes for bear tanks too. My best buddy was a bear tank. I met him before WOTLK came out through a PUG. I used to organize all my PUGS back then and naturally made sure he was in my group when I ran something.

I never mind Warlocks lifetapping, tap away I’ll heal you if I can. Same goes for hunters pets. I heal them too (if possible.)

    Regarding impatient folks…
it’s usually a toss up with my DF groups. This past weekend I had a chance to run things with my lowbie Shaman. I guess running with four ‘strangers’ can be scary but I honestly don’t mind at all. I’ve done it so much that it’s no big deal.

Admittedly, at times, I do get slightly concerned if I see people from the same guild in the group acting like jerks. I’ve been in some groups where three, or four guildmates abused that ‘privilege’ and kicked our healer or DPS just because they could. Checking blogs I’m seeing more stories like that too.

Anyway back to this past weekends PUGs. The ones that were impatient in the fail runs were the tank. If I say mana and you pull an entire room, or run two rooms ahead of me and expect me to magically be able to heal you through the walls, well don’t be surprised if you die.

I had some awesome tanks this weekend (Paladins, warriors, Druids) I also had some very very bad tanks (same classes too.) I also had a hunter who insisted on tanking, no not with his pet. He wanted to tank. The thing is we had a tank (admittedly that tank was special sorts of fail not because of his tanking ability but because he would pull rooms when I was out of mana, even though I told the group in advance I need to catch up-mana-wise. /facepalm That is one group I ended up leaving because the tank kept doing that. I think that is the second group I’ve left. I rarely leave a group.

All said, the fail pugs of this past weekend were in the minority and they were entertaining. Yes I had a lot of great laughs at some of them. :)
