BAST: No Comments = Better Bloggers?

13 Apr

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m part of a group of great WoW Bloggers that hang out at a place called Blog Azeroth (BA). Each week people over at BA come up with some ideas for fellow bloggers to blog about if they choose, and the one for this week happens to be Shared Topic: No Comments = Better Bloggers?. (BAST = Blog Azeroth Shared Topic, by the way.)

This blog is meant to help you level your characters in the game, but it’s my blog so I don’t mind making a bit of a side trip to tell you a bit about leveling your blog instead (if you happen to have one).

Our shared topic to blog about this time is:

Would we become better bloggers if we did not receive any comments?

It’s an interesting question to be sure, but mostly because the answer is going to be different for everyone.

For me it really kind of goes both ways. I had no comments when I first started blogging and in an attempt to get comments I changed how I did things. I would agree that I’ve become better at blogging, but I don’t know that it’s really tied into the comments.

Do I like getting comments? Heck yeah! Does not getting them make me try harder to blog? I can’t say that it does to be quite honest.

Would writing what it really is you want to write make you truer to the purpose that you started the blog for?

I think I already write about what I really want to write about. The blog here is dedicated to helping you level your characters and that’s what I try to accomplish. Do I like blogging about the topic? I love it. Not only is it something for other people to use in their own journey, it’s also a map for me to look back on when the time comes for me to roll another character and decide whether I want to repeat a previous process, jump to a new one, or change my mind about leveling the character in the first place (freaking warrior class).

I write to educate and inform. It’s what I want to do, it’s why I blog, and I feel it’s what I’m accomplishing right now.

I’m like the scribe hidden away in the dark recesses of the library, jotting down all the wisdom I can on the scrolls that I have available to me. Whether others read them and praise me, or they simply throw them away matters not to me. I make my contribution, such that it is, and it’s a tool for others to use as they please.

To write exactly whatever is in your head, rather than worrying about whether or not anyone will find it “interesting” or “good enough” to comment on? For the joy of writing?

This is another thing that I do right now. I really don’t care whether people find what I write to be the best information in the world or the most worthless piece of crap out there. I like to write and I like to write in the style that I’ve been using. As long as I find the writing interesting and it’s something that I would have found useful myself then I’m happy with it.

Or are comments integral to your blogging experience and if you don’t have them, you don’t write?

If I stopped blogging because I didn’t get comments I would have given up a hundred times over by now. I do have a desire to generate more comments, but I realize from doing this over the last year that how I write and what I write about isn’t really the kind of blogging that fits with comments. What more can you really say than “thanks”, “nice read”, “I did it this way”, “wish you wrote that 2 months ago”, and so on. I don’t write in a conversation- or reply-provoking style, I’m more like a book of facts that you reference, and I’m fine with that. I’d love to have people commenting and discussing on here, but much of what I write is not done in a manner that that fits that.

Personally, I find it really hard to motivate myself to write when I don’t get comments. Even if it’s just one or two, at least then I know someone’s reading.

That being said, I need to write more. :P

The diversity in what drives us to blog is one of the things I really like about the community we have. It’s cool that we have people spread across the various topics and such, but it helps show the individuality of us all as well.

I think my tendency to play solo bleeds over into my blog, I just don’t need other people in order to have fun. I definitely enjoy having other people around, but I’m just fine doing my own thing too.

But yes, you do need to blog more. :P

I blog simply because I felt like it. I didn’t really care if there’s no comments, or rarely. Even without comments; I know people are reading it. My friends and guildies are reading it. I don’t care what ratings do people give to my blog, because that blog is simply about my toon’s experiences and some rants perhaps ;p. It wasn’t meant to get a high place in blogosphere.

Though that doesn’t mean I didn’t get any feedbacks at all. They’re mostly given personally to me. That’s how I know people read it ;>

I like all of the analysis tools that WordPress gives us for seeing how many people read, subscribe, comment, and so forth. I know people are reading it from looking at that, and that makes me happy.

Having little or no comments means nothing to me. If I had no readers at all though, I would probably stop blogging at that point and go back to keeping written logs like the dozens lining my bookshelf right behind me.

You do a mighty fine job, with or without comments.

While it can be great to feed, or be inspired off comments, my experience is you can only write to them if they “flick that switch”.

    Maybe they:
    – force an argument out of you
    – get you to expand on a great point
    – send you off on a totally ubrelated tangent

but if you can’t write about it from the “you”, then it’s someone elses muse, not yours.

There have been lots of comments that have set my creative juices flowing, lots where they created a spark that died in a draft and so many more that while great comments, were the commentors thoughts, not mine.

The closest I have come to being influenced by comments is:
    – to not stop blogging (not that I have ever intended to, although there have been time I needed to slow down)
    – to come back to the fire & Gnomeaggedon… But that didn’t happen overnight and the Gnome had to inspire me again 1st.

    Damn that’s a blog post of a comment… I should have joined in instead…

    G&O!

      Thank you, sir.

If anything has kept me blogging it would be seeing my number of readers growing. I don’t have many comments, but I do see a good number of readers. I don’t have a ton of readers, hitting about 550 on the greatest of days, but that’s more than enough to keep me going.

This blog isn’t one where people wake up and say “ooh, I wonder what Psynister wrote about today!” it’s more “I don’t know how to level this DK, but I bet Psynister’s got something on his blog.” I’m not the morning news, I’m just the reference, and that’s the way I like it.

I have two separate blogs. One is about my little family so loved ones far away can stay updated. I also have a blog that lets me vent and say how I feel without getting comments from people I know that are shocked and apalled that I feel this way. Getting comments is a great motivator, but I’ll blog whether I get them or not. I’ve read many blogs that I just didn’t have anything to say.

That happens to me a lot too, really. That or I’ll write a comment, finish writing it, and then say to myself, “Self, that’s about the most worthless thing you’ve ever written. Delete it and move on, man.” And so I do.

I do enjoy your blog and subscribe to it via RSS, and read it whenever I can, usually its a great read while eating my lunch at work, keep it up!

And because of your post here I learned about Blog Azeroth, which I am now looking at as well. Good stuff!

      Thanks, I appreciate that.

Blog Azeroth is a great place for WoW bloggers to hang out. It’s one of the best communities I’ve found since I started blogging.

Commenting is a weird old thing. In the day job, I see us creating huge, highly successful blogs with very few comments, and poor traffic blogs where it seems like every single reader comments.

They’re a difficult thing to get hung up on, because the arrival of comments (or lack of them) is an imprecise science at best.

I enjoy getting comments because it usually spurs an interesting decision plus I genuinely enjoy reading people’s reactions to my comments. It’s also very motivating to get a nice comment saying how much they liked my post.

But do I write just for comments? Nope. I was blogging a long time before I consistently started getting comments and it never put me off.
