Great post, really puts heirlooms in perspective. I have noticed on occasion that a boss drop or quest reward did have better stats, but I nearly always stuck with the heirloom for the xp bonus as I knew that piece of gear would soon be obsolete.

The weapon section is great, I haven’t looked back since making those purchases. This will definitely give me pause to consider what I’m leveling with, particularly in the case of my baby rogues… that’s right, plural… I am that sick (OK, one is H, the other is A, but still…).

There’s nothing wrong with that, I have two Rogues myself. ;)

The Rogues are actually what prompted the post. I knew there were temporary upgrades here and there from dungeons or quests and what not, but it wasn’t until I really took a closer look at Rogue weapons that I saw that the heirlooms were actually very weak in some cases.

I started looking at the Rogues because I was seeing Rogues in the level 40-49 PvP brackets destroying my other toons when they weren’t using heirloom weapons. I then checked upgrades for my healers and saw things weren’t quite so bad there, but still not always one sided. That’s when I started digging around for details as to why I saw what I saw, and here we have my findings.

I was quite excited while leveling through Outlands on my priest to be able to temporarily use some different weapons. :D Some of the boss drops were undoubtedly better, especially with a Wrath +Spellpower enchant, so I had some fun using crystalline maces and weird space shards until I outleveled them, and then it was back to the old skull-headed heirloom staff.

The higher level enchants are just icing on the cake. I really hope one day they give us access to scaling enchants that we can use for heirlooms. They would probably need to work solely on the heirlooms so that they didn’t completely nullify the entire purpose of the enchanting profession, and I would be fine with that. But while 22 Intellect is great at low level, it’s only great for so long.

Honestly, I’d much prefer if Heirlooms themselves were a reusable enchant, so I could actually use the cool gear we get while leveling instead of being stuck with the Heirloom pieces.

I would love to not have to see that freaking heirloom robe ever again, but most of the others really don’t bother me (yet), and not seeing some of the gear you get from questing isn’t too big on my personal list. Most of the cool new quest gear I’ve seen are weapons, the armor hasn’t thrilled me in most cases.

Making them enchants would sort of defeat the purpose of them being heirlooms, though I wouldn’t mind a new system set up that worked like that as another option.

I’ve always considered the heirlooms as the no-fuss gear, that you can always use as a suitable item for that gear-slot. There might be a tendency to flip items in and out, but the speed of leveling often makes heirlooms the simpler approach – they are always good, and its no stress if they are not fantastic. I’m happy that they may not be BiS at level – as that would remove the need for the other valuable gear that players still hunt for.

I pop the lowbie enchants on them too, just as a way to squeeze a little more performance from them.
