Guild Wars 2: Review, Take 2

This post will be a follow-up/do-over of the review I wrote in July after BWE3. The initial review discussed things that I saw in the game based solely on my experience with that one weekend, so this time I’m going to correct some of the things that I was wrong about or that I didn’t clearly describe, and remove some of the things that bothered me then that don’t now after playing it more or understanding better.

I’m going to go a little bit deeper into the Professions (classes) in this post and relate them to WoW and SWTOR classes for those of you who are still on the fence about what you want to roll. I’ll talk about their special class mechanics and try to dispel some of the misconceptions you might have going into it if you aren’t already familiar with the GW2 Professions (like Thieves and Stealth).

Analyzing the Gem Store

Today we’re going to take a closer look at the items offered in the Guild Wars 2 Gem Store, and I will share my thoughts on the items and services that they offer and the prices they’ve put on them both in terms of Gems (the cash shop currency) and their literal cost in terms of US Dollars. I also made a Google Docs spreadsheet that has the costs broken down for euros and pounds for those of you across the pond and in…whatever other places use those currencies. And of course, I will be sharing a link to said document with you as well.

Review: The Secret World

Over the weekend I took advantage of the free weekend celebration to try out The Secret World (TSW). I had no interest in this game going into it and I’ve spent absolutely no time researching the game up to this point so be aware that I’m probably going to use some incorrect terms for things in this game and I’ll probably forget the names for just about everything as well.

I should point out that because I had no intention to play this game going into it I had nothing to be excited about beyond what actually got me excited while playing it, nor did I have anything turning me off, so this review is based entirely on the experiences I had. So don’t expect any fanboyism or anti-Funcom blather as this is nothing more than an honest review of my experiences in the game.

What F2P Means for SWTOR

In case you missed the announcement, SWTOR is going to move to the Free to Play model in November (Official F2P FAQ). It’s an… interesting way to go about the F2P model that will be very appealing to some and possibly rather alienating to others. While I know every SWTOR blogger out there is going to blog about this as well, the whole point of blogging is sharing information and opinions so I’m going to add mine to the mix regardless of the other posts out there.

Guild Wars 2: Initial Review

Note: This review concerns only Beta Weekend 3 (BWE3) as I did not take part in any of the others.

As I mentioned in last week’s post, I had initially written off every trying Guild Wars 2 because everything I had heard about it indicated that it was focused on PvP which means my wife would never play it. After some information sharing from our friends on twitter though, we found out that it actually has a good deal of PvE content as well.

Last Thursday we decided that we would take a look at the game and by Friday both my wife and I had invites to the BWE3 event. We played it for most of the weekend from the time that we finished eating after work on Friday until we went to sleep last night. We both missed the world event at the close, so you won’t get any GW2 Hunger Games information here, but I will be talking about everything that I did have a chance to actually experience.

I was working on renovating my kitchen all weekend, so I only got to play late at night and early in the mornings, but I got to experience a fair amount of content including solo PvE, solo-queued PvP (both varieties), and group PvE. My wife had more playtime during the day than I did, so you can read her thoughts about the game at Fynralyl’s Pen.

WoW. SWTOR. Guild Wars?

I’ve been itching to blog about something, anything, for over a month now but couldn’t really find a worthy topic to do it on. Today I decided I had a decent enough topic to talk about that it would be worth my time to go ahead and write it down and send it out to the masses, so here it goes.

Today I’m going to cover a little bit of what’s been going on lately in my own gaming world and how that has impacted the blog, and I wanted to address some of the issues that I see right now that will impact my gaming (and by extension my blogging) in the near future.

State of the Blog
When I was playing WoW it was easy to come up with a new topic because there was always a new class, spec or playstyle that I could write about and by the time I got through all of the choices there would be a new expansion or patch that would change things enough that I needed to start all over again. Then SWTOR came along and stole my heart away from WoW and I found myself in a world where people no longer cared about reading leveling guides or getting ideas about how to play a certain class.

Affection Farming: Black Talon & The Esseles

In a previous post on Legacy and Companions I mentioned the two entry level flash points as methods of farming affection with the starting companions for each class. Even though there are only eight different companions you can do this with, it was just a bit too much for an already lengthy post.

Unfortunately for us, this type of farming only helps with one of the Picky Companions, but any help you can get with them is welcome. Of the eight companions that you can do this with, three of them also share the same type of companion gift for their favorite, which makes this a much cheaper method of farming that affection on multiple characters than trying to buy every Weapon gift that hits the GTN.
