Mage Heirlooms

31 May

Welcome to the Mage Heirlooms Guide for Legion. This post will cover all three of the Mage specs, including the optimal enchants. Please keep in mind that heirlooms are designed for leveling, and the choices of which pieces of gear to use as well as which enchants are designed towards leveling rather than raiding. In many cases the choices are the same, but if something seems odd then I’ve likely chosen it for a reason. Feel free to ask if you’re confused or care to offer other comments or suggestions. In the long run, as long as you’re wearing heirlooms with the right primary stats on it, it doesn’t necessarily matter which ones you choose.

I guess I should have checked to see if the Crane Inscription required level 85 before buying it on the AH. I’m an idiot. Will try to get my money back

It’s a lie. Apply it with a level 85 character and it will work on a level 1 wearing it.

elemental force is still the best enchant do you think? what about mark of the shattered hand?

Which enchant is best depends on how you assign value to the enchant. Elemental Force has a proc rate of 10/minute, while Mark of the Shattered Hand procs 2.5/minute. From a pure damage output standpoint, EF will outperform MotSH until the mid 60’s. From there you need to take into account how quickly you’re able to kill your targets, and how quickly you move from one target to the next.

At level 70 you’ll see MotSH start to proc for more damage up front that EF. How quickly are the mobs dying at this point? If you’re killing mobs in less than 6 seconds, then you’re not getting the full benefit of MotSH’s bleed, so you’re wasting damage that it deals, and chances are it’s not going to take you 18 seconds to find another target, and during that 18 second window MotSH can’t proc again. Elemental Force won’t do the same amount of damage in a 6 second period as MotSH, but it deals its damage 4x as often, so it will proc on many more mobs.

From levels 1-60 MotSH is terrible in comparison to EF. Once you get to level 70+ though, MotSH starts to really pull ahead of EF, and the gap widens quickly from there. So you need to take into account what the max level of your heirlooms currently are. If they scale to 60, EF is way better. If they scale to 90 or 100, then it’s up to you; I’d say if you’re an altoholic and will reuse the heirloom I’d go EF, otherwise I’d say go MotSH.

There’s not much you can do with the bow because the items that do enchant them, that don’t suck, all require a higher level hunter to use. So unless you’re leveling a second hunter, there’s almost nothing you can do.

Engineering scopes are what you’re looking for. Start off with the crappy +1 and +2 damage ones, and then you can use bigger ones as you level up higher. Hunters get screwed on the weapon enchants.

enchanting this item causes it to become soulbound, so no you can get it with a lvl 85 anymore

All heirlooms are transferable to any toon on your account. If it says it will be soulbound it will if it isn’t an heirloom.

How the heck do I get a shoulder inscription for my lvl 29 twink, I tried getting my higher level Inscriptionst to put in on a BOA heirloom–It was red when I got it on my twink–says it requires being lvl 58 to use. Are there any Shoulder chants that my twink can use? I see plenty of others with the enhancement and I don’t have any clue how theyre doing it… Thanks

You do exactly what you just did. It turns red like it doesn’t work, but it still does.

Now that you helped me with my shoulder enhancement—question: Is there a leg enhancement I can(get) put on my lvl 29 mage twink, it’s a soulbound piece and my highest level on this account is lvl 60, i’m sure the item will be in red but i’m looking for an upgrade, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated… Thanks

Yeah, works exactly the same. Just apply it on a high level character and send it over in the mail.

If it is already equipped -, can I still have a high level put that on for me?
