Guide to Hearthstone

I know I’m late to the party as far as writing a guide goes since the game has been live for a while now and was in beta for several months as well, but I felt like writing a guide and I didn’t think it would take too long to write one for Hearthstone, so I decided to give it a shot anyway. I started playing Hearthstone about 8 months or so before launch, and have been playing with varying degrees of interest since then. Right now it’s pretty much the only game I’m playing on a regular basis.

This guide is intended to cover all of the basics of the game, including a beginners’ guide on how to get started with a solid deck as soon as you finish the tutorial and which achievements to strive for first to get yourself a nice set of starter gold for either buying packs of cards or heading into the arena.

Trinity: Evolution vs Annihilation

I don’t play all of the new MMO’s that hit the scene, but I do try out a fair variety rather than sticking to one game forever. I do tend to only play a single game at a time, because while I can split my focus between a dozen different alts, I don’t like to do the same between a dozen different games. One of the big topics out there right now for different games is whether or not the Trinity (Tank, Heals, and DPS) should exist or if it should be done away with all together.

Now, since I haven’t played all of the games out there I can only write this post based upon my own experiences. I have played many games where the trinity does exist (such as WoW, SWTOR, Rift, etc) but I have only played one MMO where it did not, which was Guild Wars 2. After reading several of the posts from other authors over the last few days in response to EverQuest Next announcing that there would be no Trinity, I started to do some thinking of my own.

This article is purely my thoughts and opinions on the matter. You’re free to agree or disagree, and I’m happy to entertain discusson on the matter, pros and cons of different options, and your own ideas here as well. I’m no expert here, I’m just a guy with an idea who feels like sharing.

Tips for Playing Rift

Since Rift recently went Free to Play, I figure there are a lot of new players running around who could use a few tips. So in this post I’m going to go over some of the things that have really helped me since I recently returned to the game after almost 2 years.

Where I’m Gaming Right Now

I took a look today out of curiosity to see just how little I’ve been on this blog this year. I knew it was low because of my inactivity as well as my jumping around from one game to another so much this year, but I wasn’t expecting to see just 2 posts for the entire year. I wrote one leveling guide which I never finished, even though I have both of the follow-up posts mostly written, and one post about changes to WoW heirlooms that are either on their way or have already gone live (I don’t know honestly, because I haven’t been playing or paying attention).

Today I figured I might as well write a quick post about what’s been going on in my gaming world and give you a bit of a heads up on where this blog might be going in the near future (if anywhere).

5.4 Enchanting Change

Alright, first I’m gonna show it to you here in case you haven’t seen the patch notes for 5.4 (full link here).

So this is going to blow the doors wide open on enchanting your gear, allowing any enchant to be cast on any item so long as it’s the appropriate type of item (you can’t enchant your chest with a weapon enchant and such, but all weapon enchants are available to all weapons unless there’s a two-handed requirement etc).

Since heirlooms are something that I place a high amount of focus on, even when I’m not actively playing the game like right now, this is a big deal that I do want to be able to cover everyone. That being said, until we’re able to do some testing on these changes it’s not going to be clear which enchants are the best for which items. So up until 5.4 goes live, consider my current Guide to Heirlooms to be correct on all fronts, but once 5.4 is out don’t believe the old guide in terms of enchanting until I’ve updated it with the results of testing.

Warlock Leveling: 1-30 Affliction

I’ve done a lot of playing around on low level Warlocks over the last couple of months, and it’s been hard to find one that really felt right in all the ways that low level alts need to in order for me to keep playing them rather than simply deleting them before I really have a chance to see what they have to offer. Having played a Warlock off and on over the last couple of expansions, I was surprised by how much things felt…off at low levels across the different specs. We’ll get into that a bit later on in the article. I did eventually find a spec that really felt right to me, and we’ll discus that as well.

For now, let’s take a look at the Affliction Warlock, what makes them (and their DoT’s) tick, and how you can become a successful soul-sucking, DoT’chucking overlord of death.

2012 in review

I’m not usually big on letting my blog post things for me, but what the heck. Figured I might as well share this with you.

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

About 55,000 tourists visit Liechtenstein every year. This blog was viewed about 690,000 times in 2012. If it were Liechtenstein, it would take about 13 years for that many people to see it. Your blog had more visits than a small country in Europe!
